News Date:06-May-2013

The 3rd meeting of the inter-state coordination committee of top officials of the governments of Odisha and Jharkhand formed to curb illegal mining activities in border areas will be held in Jharkhand in the last week of this month. “Top officials including Home Secretaries, district collectors of border areas and steel and mines officials of both the states will chalk out strategies to curb illegal mining in both the states,” said Rajesh Verma, steel and mines secretar. The second inter-state meeting had discussed ways of strengthening the online system to combat the inter-state transport of illegally mined ore. Verma also informed that as part of preventive measures, six new check gates would be erected while police power would e extended to another four districts to check the mining activities. A State Level Enforcement Squad (SLES) has been formed under the control of the Director of Mines to conduct regular checks and raids on illegal mining while officers have been vested with appropriate power to act, the mines secretary said, adding that it was decided in the meeting to add another two teams in the SLES. Presently, the SLEP is functioning with help of two teams. The SLES in May-August period of 2012 conducted 65 raids, seized 71,790 tonnes of iron ore and chromite. An amount of Rs 13.65 lakh was realized by way of penalty. As the Paradip port is not sharing information about export of minerals with the state government, the steel & mines secretary said he will take up the matter with the port authority in a couple of days in order to ensure that it will be integrated with the online system. The department has achieved integration of its i3MS with the online systems of four ports – Haldia, Dhamara, Gangavaram and Kakinada. Under the integrated mines and minerals management system (i3MS) of the department, it will be mandatory for these ports to furnish all export-related data and upload them on the system. To facilitate sharing of data, the softwares of these ports and i3MS have been integrated.
